Dear friends and colleagues,

By the kind invitation of the Centre for the Philosophy of AI, Centre for Subjectivity Research, Department of Computer Science and the Department of Psychology at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, we, the Association for Mathematical Consciousness Science, and all of our organising and supporting institutions, are delighted to announce the seventh Models of Consciousness conference (MoC7) 2026.

Organised for the first time in Copenhagen, Denmark, the world’s most liveable city, the conference offers an exciting opportunity to make new research connections and enjoy the Hygge (cosy) Danish culture during October.

This year, the conference is dedicated to bringing together researchers on the following core themes:

Philosophical foundations

Methodologies and measurements

AI, LLMs, and consciousness science
Phenomenology and applied phenomenology

As in previous years, we will gather dedicated discussion sessions on open questions. Inspired by the historical achievements, the Copenhagen interpretation in physics, we will organise collaborative work to achieve a common understanding “towards a methodological and conceptual consensus”.

If successful, our project may result in the first collective paper of this magnitude in the field.

Join us to make history as a community!

Additionally, the conference features a diverse programme of activities designed to maximise opportunities to advance the field, including invited talks, contributed talks and posters by application, together with the Mind-Matter Society Award 2026. We also have a colourful social programme including a welcome reception, excursions to the acclaimed Louisiana Museum and a conference dinner, among others.

Participation is by registration only.

We are delighted that MoC7 is hosted at the University of Copenhagen, North Campus, from October 12 to October 16, 2026, following six previous successful editions at the University of Oxford in 2019, online in 2021, at Stanford University in 2022, University of Oxford in 2023, University of Bamberg in 2024, and Hokkaido University in 2025.

We look forward to welcoming you to Copenhagen, Denmark, in October 2026!

The MoC7 organising committee.

*40 minutes plus 10 minutes for questions

Apply to give a talk or poster!

The conference hosts various opportunities for participants to present their research to the community. Applications require an abstract (250 words max) together with a short presentation application form, including keywords and the relevant theme of this year’s conference. (Participants are also welcome to attend without giving a talk or poster.)

Participant talks

Participants are invited to apply to present their research in a 20-minute talk slot (15 minutes for the talk plus 5 minutes for questions). Participant talks will be allocated in parallel sessions. Apply here before 16 June 2026.

Showcase talks

A small number of talk applications may be selected by the organising committee to be “showcase talks” and attract the offer of a 30-minute talk slot.

Poster session

Participants are invited to apply to present a poster at the poster session. Apply here before 16 June 2026.

Discussion sessions

Discussion sessions in small groups are integral to the Models of Consciousness conference tradition.

These sessions create the space to discuss open questions in the field. The sessions develop a shared sense of purpose and long-term goals among researchers working on the scientific study of consciousness.

This year, we will discuss key open questions that will contribute to methodological and conceptual consensus. The main questions will be suggested and voted on by all registered participants one month before the conference. The sessions may be recorded and summarised in the hope that they contribute to a collective paper, laying the groundwork for a methodological and conceptual understanding within consciousness science.

If successful, this ambitious project would be foundational and has never been done before in our field.

Join us in shaping the future of Consciousness Science!

Core Themes

We are delighted to announce that Models of Consciousness 7 comprises the following core themes. However, please note that contributed talk applications are open to any topic in the field, including, in particular, the neuroscience of consciousness and mathematical approaches.

Philosophical foundations in the scientific study of consciousness

Within this theme, we explore the philosophical foundations of the scientific study of consciousness. Different viewpoints on how to understand reality often influence the development of models of consciousness. By exploring foundations, we can better understand the differing approaches and identify key questions to refine model selection. We invite philosophers of mind, neuroscience, AI, science, epistemology, and aesthetics, among other relevant areas.

Methodologies, models, and measures of consciousness

Under this theme, we invite presentations on methodologies, models, and measures of consciousness. Special attention is given to the neuroscience of consciousness and how to characterise states of consciousness, developmental consciousness, animal consciousness and synthetic consciousness. Research of this kind is at the heart of the field, generating scientifically credible and useful models and measures.

AI, LLMs, and consciousness science

Under this theme, we invite investigations in consciousness science and qualitative research, leveraging new methodologies inspired by AI and LLMs. Physiological (e.g. machine learning for neural decoding) and qualitative applications (e.g. topic modelling analyses) are welcome. We also invite contributions on the latest research and insights into artificial consciousness.

Phenomenology and applied phenomenology

Within this theme, we invite phenomenologists and phenomenological investigations, including philosophical and applied areas such as phenomenological psychology, neurophenomenology, micro-phenomenology, computational phenomenology, and mathematical phenomenology, among others. We welcome rigorous studies of subjective first-person lived experiences and structural aspects. This research informs models of consciousness and, ultimately, their degree of adequacy.

Social Programme

Excursion

As is tradition at the Models of Consciousness conference, we will have our excursion on Sunday, October 11, before the conference.

We are planning an informal social event at the Carlsberg Museum to kick off discussions and break the ice.

The excursion on October 11 is not included in the conference fee and is paid on the day.

Stay tuned for details!

Art and Science

For the first time, the conference programme includes an art and science activity on Wednesday, 14 October, during the conference.

We invite participants to an amazing immersive experience at the renowned Louisiana Museum to reflect on subjective aspects and creative forms of exploration.

This is an integral component of this year’s conference programme.

The museum is a 40-60 minute drive from Copenhagen. The conference will provide buses to the Museum and back to Copenhagen.

In the museum, groups of 25 people each, accompanied by a tour guide, will experience a tour that fosters dialogue and creative experimentation throughout the exhibition, featuring the collection both indoors and outdoors. After the activity, participants will also have free time to explore the museum at their own pace, and we will reconvene for a keynote lecture.

This is an excellent opportunity to gain new insights and discover facets of yourself and each other, thereby motivating innovative research on consciousness and subjective experience.

There is no additional charge for the excursion, as it is included in the conference registration fee.

Drinks Reception

The conference also includes a drinks reception, which is also included in the conference registration fee.

Conference Dinner

Participants are invited to join the conference dinner. Venue TBA.

Attendance requires selecting the conference dinner option during online registration. Please see the registration page.

The conference dinner is not included in the conference registration fee.

Socializing

Outside of conference activities, the beautiful, historic city of Copenhagen offers a host of cultural and social activities.

Stay tuned for more!

Carbon Offsetting

The AMCS constitution includes an environmental policy that commits the association to pay particular attention to how carbon offsetting can be incorporated into plans for international events such as conferences.

Accordingly, the conference registration fee includes a flat carbon offsetting charge.

Over MoC3, MoC4, MoC5 and MoC6, a total of €17,403.00 was raised and paid to Atmosfair, a German non-profit organisation that actively specialises in CO₂ mitigation by promoting, developing and financing renewable energies in over 15 countries worldwide. Thank you for paying the MoC7 offsetting levy.

How to Join the Conference?

We invite researchers from all disciplines interested in the scientific study of consciousness to join MoC7.
